After dinner, the band began to play. Indie felt weighed down by all her thoughts and the things they’d talked about. Why had he asked her about Cole? She wished she could forget she’d ever met that man, or had anything to do with him. She wished she could forget him completely.

Wes stood and extended his hand.

A slow song had begun and other couples began to populate the dance floor. Indie took Wes’s hand, feeling a dance was better than sitting here talking about her past.

He led her to the swaying couples and brought her close, not so close that they were meshed together, but close enough that he had one hand on her lower back. She put her hand on his shoulder, her other still cupped with his.

In the low light, his light blue eyes glowed in stark contrast to his dark hair. Once Indie met his gaze, she couldn’t look away. The soft, live country music lulled her into the moment; so did their moving bodies and the warmth of his hands. He seemed to be trying hard to woo her with this date. Indie began to wonder why. He hadn’t been driven to pursue her before. Why now? His ex-wife coming to see him? Her visits definitely had prompted a change in him, as though he was certain about the direction his life would take—without his ex-wife. That left him free to let this attraction they had for each other run its course.

But what did that mean for her?

Deciding not to dwell long on that, she let herself enjoy the music and dancing. When the beat picked up, she and Wes two-stepped.

“You dance well,” he remarked as they went back to their table.

“I love country music. So did my parents. My dad taught me the two-step,” she said, welcoming the fond memories. They were all she had now.

Wes smiled and Indie could tell that pleased him. He might be having optimistic thoughts about them now, but what about a few months from now? He could realize he had plenty of time to find the right woman, or maybe he would prefer to be single for a while. This night was enchanting but in the morning she would pour herself into work and keep her distance.

They danced until they were tired and then left. Indie hadn’t smiled and laughed this much since she didn’t even know when. Years perhaps.

Laughing as they left the building, she walked with Wes to his truck as he held her hand. All the way back to the ranch, she kept looking at him, making his mouth curve up in response to the happy curve of her own. A tiny voice tried to make her listen—telling her to be careful when she got back to the ranch—but she ignored it. Deliberately. She felt too darn good.

As they approached the house, Indie didn’t want the night to end. Wes parked and they walked inside to a dark and quiet home. He switched on a light.
